3D Modelling is a fundamental stage of creating a 3 dimensional representation of a product in computer graphics technology.

 Products of high quality can be created by using 3D modelling. According to researchandmarkets.com, Global 3D modelling market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 21.75% and reach a total market size of US$17.292 billion by 2023, increasing from US$5.310 billion in 2017. This shows the demand of this technology and how widely it’s being adopted in the market.

The level of detail (LOD) is a concept in 3D modelling which is used to indicate how thoroughly 3D data should be surveyed and how much detail should be modelled. It is a concept which depicts the complexity and fineness of any 3d model, as well as their usability. With the increase in level of detail, their representations occupy larger sizes and their processing involves higher computational costs.

However, the different representations of the same set of objects are usually stored separately and are either unconnected or connected only at the object level. Higher LODs do not only increase in their geometric complexity but also in their semantic richness, that is the description of the geometry.

Workflow for creating 3D Model:

To create a 3D model of any product, client provides the reference imagery or CAD files as well as dimensions to design 3D model of the product.

Various tools that can be used for 3D modelling are Autodesk3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, Google, Sketchup etc.

Various types of LODs:

There are basically three Levels-Of-Detail (LOD) which are required for deliverables for each piece of furniture created. They should be as defined below.

Level-Of-Detail 1: These are low models whose poly count is approximately 10K or less depending upon the product or less. For hard surface objects, the Poly count should be around 2K or even lesser, if there are no curved surfaces.
For instance, while designing a 3D model of sofa, in LOD 1, minor details such as bolts, screws, brackets on the bottom will be omitted from the sofa model for this version of the model.

Other details like seat mounts and adjustment knobs can be highly simplified at the early low poly level development phase in order to meet the polygon budget.

Such type of model can be used as 20-20 CAD Symbol.

Level-Of-Detail 2: These are mid poly models whose poly count is around 15K to 40K polygons. For this level of detailing, 3D splines should be created for use as alpha based stitching objects. Models created in this LOD can be mostly used for Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality or in games.

Level-Of-Detail 3: These are high poly models whereas poly count level in this LOD should be around 50K – 150K polygons. Here, 3D splines should be created for use as alpha based stitching objects Models created in this LOD can be used for photorealistic room scene renderings.

As lot of product return happens in e-Commerce as the actual product turns out to be different in looks than the one shown in the shopping portal, as a result it harms the reputation of the e-commerce brand. With 3D technologies, one can create models that give a fair idea about the product and hence avoid shopper's disappointment.
